It’s that time again when your septic tanks needs cleaning, but who do you use this is the question most people ask when the time comes, well if your house is in the South Yorkshire area why not use us Airload Environmental, we are a family run business based in Sheffield our jet vac tankers with their powerful vacuum and on board high pressure jetter can empty and wash septic tanks, cesspools  quickly with minimum disruption, we will then dispose of your sewage and clean up any spillage if your tank has overflowed, disinfectant can be applied if required.

SEPTIC TANKS

A Septic Tank is a multi-chamber storage tank allowing liquid and solid waste to separate: The liquid is allowed to flow out of the tank and be disposed of separately, First stage: the sewage enters a settlement chamber, allowing solid waste (sludge) to sink and the liquid to rise to the surface. The surface liquid makes contact with oxygen and the organic matter starts to breakdown biologically. This liquid still contains sewage but in small enough particles to be carried through the discharge outlet and into the ground (soakaway), Septic Tanks only partially treat sewage. So unlike a cesspool, a septic tank has a soakaway (drainfield) system attached to it. In an ideal situation the system is totally gravity fed. When you pull the plug in the sink or flush the toilet, the contents run down the sewer pipes (drains) into the septic tank.So if you have just let out 2 gallons of waste from your kitchen sink as it drops into the septic tank, 2 gallons of partially treated sewage (final effluent) will be displaced out through the soak-away system.

The soak-away is basically a series of perferated pipes that allow the final effluent to be dispersed into the surrounding soil.

On average a septic tank will need emptying once a year.

CESSPOOLS

A Cesspool is simply a single-chamber storage tank with no outlet. The tank is usually very large (as it has to contain all waste water & sewage) . The only way to dispose of the waste is by hiring a licensed contractor to remove the sewage for off-site disposal. A cesspool can be any shape or size, old ones are usually concrete, brick or steel. Nowadays fibreglass or reinforced plastic are usually used and have a minimum capacity of 18,000 litres. They should be watertight to prevent leakage of sewage into the ground or more commonly the ingress of groundwater into the tank. This obviuosly can prove an expensive problem either way, should grounwater enter the tank you will be paying for this to be emptied as well as your sewage, which will cause the frequency of ‘tank empties’ to be increased.

Cesspool Law-Under the Public Health Act 1936 it is an offence for a cesspool to either overflow or leak into surrounding ground, Local Authorities have the power to fine the owners of properties where this happens, in addition if pollution enters the watercourse The Environment Agency may take legal action under the Water Resources Act 1991. The penalty for this is upto £20,000 and/or 3 months imprisonment.

SEPARATORS & SILT TRAPS

Designed for surface water applications, Separators remove pollutants (of a certain specific gravity) from effluent and allow the cleaner water to be passed into a surface water drainage system. Pollutants are retained for removal and disposal, Separators work by allowing the pollutants and water to naturally separate out from one another – pollutants will float on the surface of water and can then be drawn off. Silt will also settle within the unit and can also be drawn off.

GREASE & SILT TRAPS

Grease & Silt Traps work in a more basic fashion but again, remove unwanted contaminants from waste water before it reaches the drainage system. Often used in catering applications

Treatment Plant

A treatment plant is a mechanical system that treats the sewage from your property and allows the final effluent to be discharged into a watercourse. Somewhere usually close to the system will be an electric supply, to power either the pump or the motor. Again a Treatment Plant will need periodic emptying on average once per year, but this can increase or decrease depending on the size of Plant & number of people in the property. A Treatment Plant will also need regular servicing by the manufacturer or a qualified service agent.
